Oh dear. Who knew vegetables would be so difficult? One of my dictionaries (D1) says this is "chicory", though anyone in their right mind would have to agree with imagesearch that it is "endive". My other dictionary (D2) just says it's "endive" and offers no other possibility. My Spanish-Spanish dictionary suggests that it is endive, or a type of "escarola", which is what D1 says is the word for "endive".
In the following picture
endive found under the listing for "endive" at bartleby.com, D1 is clearly referring to the top version as "endibia" and the bottom version as "escarola".
So apparently, "endive" can be either "endibia" OR "escarola", depending on whether what you have in mind more closely resembles the top version or the bottom version.
I'm with D1: they look completely different to me, and so it seems reasonable that they would have different names as well.
I am SO not a botanist. And I hate most vegetables, though not endive.
